Reykjavik features the world’s oldest parliament, many cultural
attractions, a vibrant arts scene and geothermally heated water

Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, can be accessed
by snowmobile. Other glaciers include Mýrdalsjokull in the
south, Langjökull near the western interior and Snæfellsjökull
on the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
Outdoor attractions in Iceland include whale watching, bird watching,
horseback riding, fishing, hiking and river rafting.
It is possible to travel to and from Iceland from Britain and
continental Europe via ferry, allowing you to hire a Motorhome
just once for your driving holiday. Most of Iceland’s roads
are good quality, making a campervan vacation in Iceland easy and
enjoyable. Some roads in remote areas require a 4WD or SUV vehicle.

Iceland has campsites located throughout the country that offer
the facilities you need. Because it is off the beaten track, you
are unlikely to encounter many other travellers during your Motorhome
driving holiday. The roads carry very little traffic.
Most Icelanders speak good English so language barriers will not
be a problem. This will be handy if you need to ask for supplies
during your Motorhome vacation.
Many roads in Iceland are unsealed, but they are well maintained,
suitable for RV or campervan use. Landmaelingar Islands publishes
a good road map.
The Westfjords are famous for animal and bird life, the Dynjandi
waterfall, and the exhibition on witchcraft and witch-hunts at
Hólmavík.
West Iceland is known for its natural beauty forged by a volcanic
past. The hot spring Deildartunguhver gushes 97°C water at
180 litres per second. Breiðafjörður is known for
bird watching, including the Icelandic white eagle. Reykholt was
home to Snorri Sturluson, a medieval chieftain and scholar.
North Iceland features the Midnight Sun in summer, and the Northern
Lights. Eyjafjörður, Skjálfandi bay, and Húsavík
are known for whale watching. Skagafjörður offers horse
riding and white water rafting.
East Iceland is a wild region of glaciers and mountain peaks.
Sightseeing cruises are available on the Breiðamerkurjökull
glacial lagoon.
In South Iceland, Þingvellir, on the World Heritage List,
was the site of Alþingi, the world’s first parliament.
Skálholt is another historic site. The region also has many
hot springs and magnificent waterfalls. Mt. Hekla and Mt. Katla
are two active volcanoes. Mt. Katla is located under the Mýrdalsjökull
glacier.
The Westman Islands are known for natural beauty and abundant
birdlife. Heirmaey Island was the site of a volcanic eruption 30
years ago.
The Central Highlands feature glaciers, ice caves, the inland
valley of Þórsmörk and Lake Hvítárvatn.
Some areas cannot be accessed by ordinary vehicles. Make sure to
hire a 4WD vehicle in order to visit these areas.
During your campervan or RV driving holiday, it is recommended
that you stick to formal campsites. Many roads are situated on
causeways anyway, making it impossible to pull over. Not all campsites
have power available, so plan ahead for this.
